Textile Art Projects This was first printed in Classic Stitches magazine in 1999. It
explains the way that the kits work. When someone creates a work of art they have to have competence
in the areas of:
1. Composition (the arrangement of colours and shapes)
2. Form (abstract- squares, circles or pictorial- insects, animals)
3. Colour
4. Technique (paint, embroidery, quilting etc) Without all these areas working in harmony with each other good
design cannot be achieved.
If you are not experienced it is easy to find yourself over challenged
by working with so many areas at once. Consequently you may become
overwhelmed and disheartened. One of the basic principles of good teaching is to push students
a little further than they are already capable. What I offer is
a simple way of working with one or two areas at a time so that
you are not over challenged but unlike using a kit you still develop
your creative abilities.
As you become more experienced you will desire and be able to tackle
more challenges. You make more of you own decisions. I offer collections of fabrics that include palettes of harmonizing
colours in a variety of textures. They will work together however
you chose to use them. Yet you can enjoy creating your own composition
within this selected range. I offer templates that have been designed in outline shape and
proportion to work together yet you can select your preferred designs
or forms and make your own arrangement.
The packs come in a small picture, cushion, panel, or a larger wall
hanging size. The wall-hanging comes in three colours. These colour
divisions help the novice to place the designs in a balanced way,
and therefore it is easy to create a balanced arrangement. If you are more experienced and want to create more of your own
design I offer a selection of fabrics by the metre. Each template
design comes in three different sizes for use with more complex
arrangements. Hand dyed fabrics and threads beads & mirrors
can be brought separately. The initial technique is simple iron on applique and can easily
be done by the beginner. This technique allows all to enjoy working
with colour and design. It then makes an extremely versatile base
for further techniques such as quilting or embroidery on fabric
and even paper. Embellish the work with beads, gold & silver
hand made papers, copper foil or Indian shisha mirrors and build
up an exquisite unique textile piece. A tutorial booklet is provided that will show you how to work
with these areas. It also explains how to create your own freestyle
embroidery embellishment designs.
